of Wattle’s pantry back at Hadral Manor. Seated, reading a magazine

about knitting patterns, was an elderly woman. Her tanned skin was

wrinkled, and the hands that held the magazine looked almost clawlike.

Set on the edge of her nose was a pair of wire-framed spectacles, over

which she peered at Lornyc.

She shuffled forward and pushed herself out of the chair. “And

you are?”

Lornyc smiled in bemusement. The little old lady was very short,

her feet not reaching the floor, but her disposition clearly stated that she

was not someone to be trifled with.

“Lornyc Juste,” he answered respectfully.

She nodded to herself and picked up a silver bell from the reading

table next to her chair. “You will take tea?” It was phrased as a

question, but it was purely rhetorical. “Saffron, are you all right, dear?”

“I’m fine, Madam Tyler. Mr. Juste came to my rescue. I thought

you’d like to meet him.” She grinned at Lornyc. “I’m going to get

cleaned up. See you later, Mr. Juste.”

As Saffron left, another woman entered carrying a tea tray. She

was extremely tall for a woman, a good few inches taller than Lornyc,

and had a broad, almost mannish build. Her long copper hair was

pulled back and plaited into a ponytail that hung over her left shoulder,

almost reaching her waist.

“Thank you, Diam,” said Madam Tyler.

“Mr. Juste, this is Diam. She is a relatively new addition to

Korin’s collection.”

Diam extended her hand, and Lornyc shook it. “That makes two

of us new to the palace.”

She didn’t let go of his hand. Instead she turned it over and

examined the back of it. “You have good hands for a valet, especially a

valet who has spent the last week working as a groom.”

“Lord Hadral is not a difficult master,” he said, trying not to let

his uncertainty show in his voice.

“Diam, release the poor boy,” ordered Madam Tyler. “Off you

go, see if any of the girls need help with the laundry.”
